Hydrochemical Diagnostic Summary

When reverse osmosis purges 98% of dissolved minerals, it creates ultra-pure water devoid of bicarbonate buffers. Atmospheric carbon dioxide naturally dissolves into this unbuffered water, forming weak carbonic acid and dropping pH to 5.8 - 6.2. Post-RO remineralization is not health marketing; it is essential aqueous chemistry that protects household plumbing and restores physiological mineral balance.

1. The Carbonic Acid Reaction in Unbuffered Water

Water in nature maintains an equilibrium dictated by calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. When water passes through a TFC reverse osmosis membrane, these multivalent mineral ions are rejected by 98%+.

However, dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO₂) is non-ionic and has a smaller molecular size than water itself. CO₂ passes completely unimpeded through the membrane. In the absence of alkaline mineral buffers, the dissolved CO₂ reacts immediately with H₂O:

CO₂ (dissolved gas) + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃ (carbonic acid) ⇌ H⁺ + HCO₃⁻

This spontaneous reaction produces free hydrogen ions (H⁺), dropping the permeate water's pH into the 5.8 to 6.2 range. While this weak acidity is safely buffered by saliva in the human body, it can impart a flat, slightly bitter metallic taste and corrode copper pipes or fittings downstream.

2. The Dual-Media Solution: Calcite & Corosex Chemistry

The optimal engineering method to restore water balance without creating artificial salt spikes is an in-line dual-media remineralization cartridge consisting of 90% Calcite (natural calcium carbonate) and 10% Corosex (specially processed magnesium oxide).

  • Calcite (CaCO₃): Soluble only when carbonic acid is present. It dissolves precisely until equilibrium is reached (pH 7.3 - 7.5), then self-regulates and stops dissolving.
  • Corosex (MgO): Possesses 5 times the neutralizing capacity of calcite per pound. It handles high-flow countertop dispensing spikes, raising pH safely into the 7.6 to 8.2 range.
  • Mineral Enrichment: Adds 30 to 50 ppm of bioavailable calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions, restoring the crisp mountain spring water mouthfeel.
